If your passport has been stolen or you have lost it and have to go back to Italy or your Country of legal residency, this Consulate General can issue for you an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) valid only to go back to Italy or to the Country of permanent residence (with verification of current AIRE registration).
The request for an ETD must be submitted to the Italian Consulate/Embassy from whose jurisdiction the return flight departs.
- The ETD is valid only of ONE trip back to Italy or other Country or permanent legal residency;
- If the return flight departs from another Consular jurisdiction, the request for the ETD (including the Police Report of lost/stolen passport within this jurisdiction) must be submitted to the Consulate/Embassy from whose jurisdiction the return flight departs.
- Because the ETD is only valid for a limited time, the application for an ETD should be submitted only within 7 days of the departure.
To obtain an appointment for the issuance of the ETD, the following documentation must be emailed first to passaporti.losangeles@esteri.it:
- Formulario di richiesta per il rilascio dell’ETD
- Photocopy of lost/stolen Italian passport PLUS photocopy of E.S.T.A;
- Lost/Stolen passport report issued by the local Police authority;
- Printed copy of return flight itinerary;
Obligation to return the ETD upon arrival
Please note that, once you have reached your final destination, the holder is required to hand the ETD over to the Border Police or any other police authority, regardless of any remaining validity of the document.
Failure to return the ETD may result in reports or complications during future border crossings.
The day of the appointment you must come to the Consulate bringing with you the original of the document already emailed plus the following:
– 2 passport size pictures;
– another form of photo ID (if any);
