Italian citizens who marry abroad are required to request the registration of their own marriage to their AIRE Comune. If both spouses are Italian citizens but have a different AIRE Comune, it will be necessary to complete two distinct “Richiesta di trascrizione” (Request for registration) forms.

Marriages between two people of a different sex will be transcribed in the marriage registries, while marriages between two people of the same sex will be transcribed in the civil unions’ registry.

Only ‘certified copy’ certificates will be accepted and will remain on file at this Consulate General and will not be returned to the applicant.

If the marriage you are registering is not your first, you will also need to register all previous marriages and relative divorces, presenting the documentation indicated on this website.

Matrimonial property regime: Eventual agreements of property signed in the USA have no legal value within the Italian ordinance. Whomever desires to choose the regime of separation of property can sign the relative convention with our legal office. For further information we invite you to email the office directly at: notarile.losangeles@esteri.it

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Before submitting or sending a certificate issued outside Italy, please CAREFULLY check the names, dates and places of birth with the appropriate local authorities. If there are any errors, you will need to request an amendment from the office that issued the certificate;
  • For certificates not issued in the consular jurisdiction of the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles, it is highly recommended to always check the correctness of the documentation with the Italian Consulate territorially competent over the issuance of the documentation by consulting their website. The procedure to be followed may vary depending on the country or state where the documents was issued, according to the agreements in force with the country in question. Find your competent consulate here.

  • Names acquired by marriage:
    For Italian citizens,
    the changing of a name acquired following a marriage, being of an administrative nature, is not considered acceptable by Italian norms, and names can be changed only with a Decree of name change or directly in Italy via your competent Prefettura;

      What is a certified copy? What is a “Long Form” version of a certificate?
      A “certified copy” of a U.S. certificate is an official copy of a document, such as a birth, marriage, or death certificate, that has been notarized by a competent body. This copy is considered legally valid and identical to the original. To obtain a certified copy, you must request it from the office that issued the original certificate. The certified copy is often used for legal, bureaucratic or identification purposes, as it provides the same validity as the original.

      A U.S. certificate in the “long form” version is a detailed copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate. Compared to the “short form”/“Abstract” version, which contains only the essential information of the holder of the certificate, the “long form” version includes additional information such as parents' names, place of birth, name of the parents of the bride and groom for marriage certificates, who signed the certificate etc. This version is often required for legal purposes, such as applying for a passport or other official documents.
      PLEASE NOTE: Short form or abstract versions are NOT accepted for requesting transcription of documents in Italy.
