In order to obtain a new Italian passport, adult applicants must be:
- Italian Citizens;
- Reside in our consular jurisdiction of South California, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada;
- Enrolled in AIRE (Registry of Italian residing abroad). Please, before scheduling an appointment, make sure that your AIRE application has been not only received but also confirmed and sent to the Comune in Italy by our AIRE office. AIRE applications not finalized will result in a rejection of your passport application.
- Have an appointment booked online through our PRENOT@MIbooking system with our Consulate.
PLEASE NOTE that if you reside in the States of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico or in the San Diego area, instead than coming to Los Angeles, you can also schedule an appointment to acquire all the biometric information (photo, digital signature and fingerprints) directly at the following Honorary Consulates (only for applicants registered AIRE with our consulate):
- SAN DIEGO

On the day of the appointment, each applicant will have to appear in person and arrive prepared with all of the documents requested, completely filled out and signed. Please bring original and photocopies of the documents and the money order and the envelope completed. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DELAY OF THE PROCESS AND IN SOME CASES EVEN IN DENIAL OF THE APPLICATION WITH THE POSTPONEMENT TO ANOTHER DATE.
A) Applicants that are ONLY Italian Citizens:
2) Pictures are normally taken in the Office at the time of the application, but we still recommend to bring one picture (US Passport size are acceptable) in case our new photolive system is down or malfunction.
3) Previous Italian passport (unless you are a first-time applicant or if it has been lost/stolen, in which case you should file a Police report and bring a copy of it with you);
4) US Visa or Green Card issued after August 16th, 1992. If these documents cannot be provided the applicant will have to provide a US Immigration declaration confirming the applicant never became an American Citizen (certificate of nonexistence of record) or show the US entry stamp on the passport. Without the above NO PASSPORT will be issued;
5) Passport Fee. Please consult our Consular fees: the amount corresponds to the line “RILASCIO ART. 27 (A + B)”. Payments can only be made with money orders or cashier’s checks made out to “Consulate General of Italy”. No personal checks or credit/debit cards are accepted;
6) Normally, the passport will be issued the same day of the application. However, please bring also with you a pre-paid, self-addressed USPS Express or Priority Mail return envelope (we do not accept Fedex, UPS or DHL) and fill out this mailing consent form. In fact, in case of unforeseeable malfunctioning of the system or in very busy periods of the year the passport can be mailed instead or picked up in person when ready.
