On the occasion of the 80th Anniversary of the Italian Republic, an institutional celebration was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, bringing together representatives of the Italian and Italian-American communities, consular and local authorities, as well as leaders from the business, academic, cultural, and sports sectors, alongside friends of Italy from across Southern California.

The event also marked the Third Italian Sport Day in the World in Los Angeles, highlighting the role of sport as a powerful instrument of public diplomacy, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.

Among the distinguished guests were Olympic athlete Francesca Lollobrigida, representing Italian sporting excellence and the journey toward Milano Cortina 2026, and Niccolò Campriani, Olympic champion and Senior Vice President of Sports for LA28, who emphasized the strong connection between Italy and the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028.

A central moment of the evening was the lighting of the Olympic torch, jointly performed by the Consul General and Francesca Lollobrigida, symbolizing the handover from Milano Cortina 2026 to Los Angeles 2028 and celebrating the shared values of excellence, resilience, friendship, and community that unite Italy and the United States.

The evening concluded with a performance by the USC Trojan Marching Band, which added energy and ceremonial significance to the occasion.

As Italy celebrates 80 years of Republic and the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence, the event reaffirmed the enduring friendship between the two nations and the vital contribution of the Italian and Italian-American community to the cultural, economic, and social fabric of Southern California.
