Marriages or Civil Unions celebrated in the State of NEW MEXICO

The documents to be presented are the following:

1) Form to request the registration in Italy of marriage or civil union celebrated outside Italy (Marriage, Civil Unions);

2) Certified Copy of the MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE (example), issued by the competent authorities (County Clerk Office). The Vital Records office in New Mexico releases the MARRIAGE LICENSE in the same document, that being said, they do not include all the necessary information (regarding both the spouses and their parents). The Italian Spouse will thus have to complete a substitute declaration of affidavit (available here);

3) Apostille (declaration of international validity) applied on the Marriage Certificate, issued by the “Secretary of State” of the State in which the marriage or civil union was celebrated (list of Secretaries of State); the Apostille does not require translation;

4) Translation in Italian of the Marriage Certificate, it must be complete, typed up and faithful to the original in every aspect (list of translators). The format of dates must follow European format: Day/Month/Year;

6) Photocopy of the Italian spouse’s Italian valid passport, and a copy of the foreign citizen spouse’s passport. If both spouses are Italian, please each provide a copy of your passport;

7) If easily available to you, a photocopy of the birth certificate of the foreign spouse – please note this is OPTIONAL (no translation – if already in English – and no Apostille).

    What is a certified copy? What is a “Long Form” version of a certificate?
    A “certified copy” of a U.S. certificate is an official copy of a document, such as a birth, marriage, or death certificate, that has been notarized by a competent body. This copy is considered legally valid and identical to the original. To obtain a certified copy, you must request it from the office that issued the original certificate. The certified copy is often used for legal, bureaucratic or identification purposes, as it provides the same validity as the original.

    A U.S. certificate in the “long form” version is a detailed copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate. Compared to the “short form”/“Abstract” version, which contains only the essential information of the holder of the certificate, the “long form” version includes additional information such as parents' names, place of birth, name of the parents of the bride and groom for marriage certificates, who signed the certificate etc. This version is often required for legal purposes, such as applying for a passport or other official documents.
    PLEASE NOTE: Short form or abstract versions are NOT accepted for requesting transcription of documents in Italy.
