The donation came as part of the “2013, Year of Italian Culture in the United States” and the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth.
The bust was presented by Consul General Perrone in a ceremony held before the opening. Accepting the gift on behalf of the Los Angeles Opera was its musical director, James Conlon.
The gift recognized the commitment of Los Angeles’ acclaimed artistic and musical ensemble to Verdi’s music and reflected the strong ties and friendship existing between Italy and the City of Angels.
The bust, which will be permanently placed in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, had been on display at the Consul General’s residence as part of the exhibition “Di Bronzo e Di Fuoco” (Of Bronze and Fire). The exhibition was held at the Italian Cultural Institute, while selected pieces were displayed at the residence.
The exhibit, for which the Mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, sent a message of well wishing, included important bronze sculptures cast by Fonderia Marinelli and reproducing works by artists such as Ghiberti, Giambologna, Tacca, Cellini as well as Greek, Etruscan and Roman masters. In its activity the Florentine foundry avails itself of molds taken directly from original masterpieces, thus being able to reproduce sculptures identical to the originals.
The project attested to the centuries old artisan tradition of Tuscan metal-work and to its important role in the preservation of original art work.

On November 9, a bronze bust of Giuseppe Verdi, based on the Maestro’s famous portrait by Boldrini and cast by the historic Ferdinando Marinelli Foundry of Florence, was donated to the Los Angeles Opera at the opening of “Falstaff” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
