On January 27th \u2013 the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau \u2013 Los Angeles commemorated a Day of Remembrance in memory of all the Italians who were victims of the Holocaust, and all those who risked their own lives to try and save others. Reading ceremonies were held throughout the city, organized by the Consulate General of Italy, the American Jewish Committee, the Italian Cultural Institute and the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. Six schools participated in the reading of the victims\u2019 names – three Catholic and three Jewish . \u201cWe wanted to remember the victims by reading their names and their personal stories,\u201d stated Consul General Perrone. \u201cThe impressive participation in each ceremony is an important sign of collective commitment to fight discrimination and intolerance. This was our way to underline the depth of the systematic destruction that millions of human beings endured in the name of racial prejudice and human hatred.\u201d

An emotional ceremony was held at the Consul General\u2019s residence in Los Angeles in the evening of same day, when Consul General Perrone awarded writer and Holocaust survivor Gertrude Goetz with the second \u201cMi ricordo\u2026 I remember Award\u201d. Mrs. Goetz is the author of the book \u201cMemories of Kindness: Growing up in War Torn Europe\u201d in which she recalls the generosity and compassion of the residents of the little city of Castilenti in central Italy, who welcomed with warmth and kindness little Gertrude and her family fleeing Nazi persecution.
