The silver screen smorgasbord, offers Angelinos the opportunity to experience award-winning films, connect with European filmmakers and talent, network with professionals, explore cultural institutions and unite through the undeniable power of film!<\/p>\n<p>Starring Europe is a cultural and social event and serves as a vehicle to bring arts and culture from the EU to Los Angeles while simultaneously spotlighting festival award winners from 14 EU countries. The short and feature films embody the rich heritage and diversity of cinema of Europe, while presenting them in the film capital of the world: Los Angeles! The opening night will include red carpet arrivals and an opening night reception. With film talent invited to speak at screenings, panel discussions and a closing night fashion show, this is an ideal way for expats and Los Angeles residents alike to experience these European delicacies.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the festival\u2019s film features make their international premieres at this year\u2019s Starring Europe!<\/p>\n<p>Leading the pack is, Barbara Albert\u2019s biopic <strong>MADEMOISELLE PARADIS<\/strong>, one of three features by a female director. Set in 18th century Vienna, the acclaimed Austrian film stars Maria Dragus as a blind pianist caught between the men trying to exploit her talents and the controversial physician treating her. Hungarian film, <strong>KINCSEM<\/strong> is a similarly lavish period piece, though its title character is a record-breaking real-life racehorse.<\/p>\n<p>Poland\u2019s <strong>BREAKING THE LIMITS<\/strong> is also a spellbinding biopic, telling the true story of Jerzy Gorski, a former junkie turned athletic champion. Similarly, Romania provides drama in the form of <strong>POROROCA<\/strong>, which closes out this year\u2019s EU series. The stunning thriller features a young father on a mission to find his missing daughter. The film offers audiences dramatic grit and suspense. Meanwhile <strong>MIRACLE<\/strong> looks at Lithuania shortly after the fall of communism through the prism of a struggling livestock farmer.<\/p>\n<p>Economic struggles are given a comedic spin in Croatia\u2019s <strong>QUIT STARING AT MY PLATE<\/strong>, as a 24-year old woman (Pula Film Festival Best Actress Mia Petricevic) spreads her wings after becoming the breadwinner for her poverty-stricken family. The female protagonists of Belgium\u2019s <strong>CHARLIE AND HANNAH\u2019S GRAND NIGHT OUT<\/strong> discover new horizons \u2026 and travel across the galaxy after consuming \u201cmagical candy\u201d during a night on the town. Similarly, light-hearted but more grounded in reality, is <strong>WELCOME TO GERMANY<\/strong>; the German social comedy looks at a family that takes in a Nigerian refugee.<\/p>\n<p>Most programs in this series include an opening short. Among the highlights is Italy\u2019s \u201c<strong>Ghetto PSA<\/strong>,\u201d a look at immigration peppered with hip-hop; director Rossella Schillaci will appear in person with the film. Bulgaria supplies one of three shorts directed by women, Sarah Kruchowski \u2018s \u201c<strong>Audition<\/strong>,\u201d about an aspiring actress dealing with the demands of motherhood; lead actress Maria Bobeva and producer Petro Dushkov will appear with the film. From the Czech Republic,\u201c<strong>Who\u2019s Who in Mycology<\/strong>\u201d was a 2017 Student Academy Award winner for Best Narrative Short. Latvian national film festival Best Student Film winner \u201cConverts,\u201d dealing with a journalist\u2019s dangerous involvement with radical Islam, is one of four shorts making its Los Angeles premiere here. This panel discussion is presented by the Pacific Council on International Policy (PCIP) with the support of USC Center on Public Diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the main festival, Starring Europe will also hold events at UCLA and Cal State Long Beach in order to bring films from the EU to SoCal colleges and universities.
