Design for a Better Future

Designers Mattia Biagi, Giulio Cappellini and Rossana Orlandi who will explore how the pandemic has changed and perhaps will change design to improve our lives. From eco-sustainability to the increased importance of multi-use spaces as we work from home, this presentation will touch upon various design themes.

Preceded by a special video message from Venetian architects and product designers Pio and Tito Toso

2020 Ambassadors of Italian Design for Los Angeles

MATTIA BIAGI is an Italian artist and Designer who lives and works in Los Angeles. With over two decades of experience, he created installations in numerous galleries and museums all over the world, such as Palais de Tokyo, and The Louvre Abu Dhabi. including large scale and video installations. Permanent work is exhibited in Museums in the USA and Italy at venues such as Castello di Rivara and Mint Museum.

Due to his rise to prominence on the international art scene he was commissioned by many companies to create unique collaborations for award winning design products . Mattia also became Brand ambassador for prestigious companies such as Johnny Walker.

With a deep passion for design and art he has worked in the past 18 years as a creative fundamental figure for some of the most important Italian design companies in the West Coast. Finally Mattia is one of the founders and the creative director of Studio Dardo, creating some of the most incredible houses and projects on the West Coast.

GIULIO CAPPELLINI studied architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan. During his studies he worked at the Studio Gio’ Ponti. His work focuses mainly on industrial design, promotion and art direction for companies including Cappellini, Ceramica Flaminia and Icone luce. He is the art director and the brand ambassador for Istituto Marangoni’s School of Design and Supertudio piu’. He holds seminars and teaches at some of the most important Universities and design schools around the world. He has organized exhibits about Italian design at the Museo Maxxi Roma, Palazzo Reale Milano, the Embassies of Italy in Milan, Paris, Prague and the Saatchi Gallery in London.

ROSSANA ORLANDI is a design gallerist and curator and the owner of Galleria Rossana Orlandi in Milan and also Porto Cervo. Her gallery, considered one of the eight most important Design galleries in the world, is a major design world destination for the past 18 years where the creations of the most brilliant minds of design are on display. A diminutive woman with a a larger-than-life presence, Rossana Orlandi comes from a family working in industrial textile production and for many years she worked as a consultant for well-known style icons such as Giorgio Armani, Jean Paul-Gaultier, Gianni Versace and Vivienne Westwood. Today, nominated as one of the 200 most important people in the international Design community, she is gifted with the ability to spot new creative talent before others do, and is regularly inted to organize exhibitions in Italy and abroad and to collaborate with high-end brands in fashion, luxury and lifestyle.Since 2019, with her daughter Nicoletta Orlandi Brugnoni, firmly convinced that Plastic is not guilty, because guilty are the abuse and misuse of this material, she gave birth to RoGUILTLESSPLASTIC, the international project spread with the creatives all over the world to use recycled plastic. Part of this project is the Ro Plastic Prize.

Pio and Tito Toso are brothers, born in Venice where they graduated in Architecture. They worked with the most qualified Italian companies: iGuzzini, Artemide, Foscarini, Venini, Leucos, Vistosi, for lighting; and Guzzini, Pedrali, Alessi, Metalco, Segis for furniture. Their practice works in building projects in different countries. They received several awards such as the Red Dot Design Award 2017-2015-2012, Design Plus 2016, ADI Design Index 2016, ADI International Compasso d’Oro Award 2015 selection, Good Design Award 2009, I.Dot selection 2006-2007, Young&Design 2005.
