World Week of Italian Cuisine 2018


Hollywood celebrities find Italian food and the Mediterranean Diet irresistible. For the third time running, the tastiest and most anticipated event of the yearwill land in Los Angeles. The Week of Italian Cuisine is an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Agriculture for the enhancement of Italian quality cuisine in the world.

A rich programme of events will highlight the Mediterranean Diet as a model of proper eating - a balanced and sustainable lifestyle for both health and environment. From November 12 to 18the Consulate General will feature Italian food excellences through a series of masterclasses, workshops, exhibits, demos, films, lectures, and galas.

The full schedule of events is coordinated in Los Angeles by the Consulate General along with Sistema Italia/Team Italy (Italian Cultural Institute IIC, Italian Trade Agency ICE, Italian Tourist Agency ENIT and Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West IACCW) and Italian Academy of Cuisine.

This year under the spotlight is Apulian cuisine, with its natural and tasty flavors typical of the Mediterranean, with special menus realized by “Q” (for Quality) Italian restaurants of California, Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.

Music will also be in the foreground with the presentation of the most famous dishes that inspired Gioachino Rossini (gourmet expert and great lover of Italian cuisine) on the 150th anniversary of his death.

Hollywood is targeting Italian products not only in the gastronomy field, but also in the movie industry. As it is shown also this year by the renewed collaboration between the “Week” and “Cinema Italian Style”, a world-renowned festival that features the best of the contemporary Italian film production, organized by Luce-Cinecittà.

On the occasion of the opening night of the Festival (November 13), which will feature Italy’s foreign language Oscar entry “Dogman” by acclaimed director Matteo Garrone, the starred chef from Puglia, Felice Sgarra, will collaborate in creating a special menu together with the brilliant chef Giuseppe Manco of the Mr. C. Hotel. Once again, the Apulian cuisine, which combines quality ingredients with influences from all over the world, will represent the meeting point between movie stars and starred cuisine!

Chef Sgarra will also prepare a special meal in collaboration with Obicà Restaurant and its talented chef Simone Santopietro, putting a new spin on traditional Apulian recipes at the reception organized by the Consul General at his residence in Malibu. The event will showcase DOP national products and will also feature food and tourist itineraries related to Matera, the European Capital of Culture 2019.

Moreover, numerous initiatives will be organized in support of the campaign to include the Prosecco Hills of Valdobbiadene in the UNESCO cultural heritage list, and Parma’s candidacy to host the UNESCO World Forum on food creative industries in 2019.

The "Week" will also promote the "Pasta Pesto Day" initiative ( to launch a new and positive image of the Liguria region, following the tragedy of the Morandi Bridge which has recently hit Genoa.

Finally, the reception will be also the occasion to confer the honor of “Commander of the Order of the Star of Italy - OSI” to the entrepreneur Piergiorgio Luciani for his commitment to culture and economic development and for his continuous support to our community.

01.05.2018-31.05.2018 – LA Food Bowl – Food and Wine Festival aimed at raising awareness and funds to fight food waste and promote sustainability in the nutrition field. Promotion of renowned Mediterranean Diet destinations of Italy. Organized by LATimes in collaboration with ENIT Italia at various restaurants and supermarkets of Los Angeles.

16.05.2018-20.05.2018 – Night Markets –Unique visual experience to promote Italian destinations and flavors. Sponsored by the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT) in Downtown Los Angeles.

11.07.2018 – Archeological and Food Itineraries of the Campania Region –Initiatives aimed at enhancing Campania's archaeological and food & wine itineraries at the Italian Cultural Institute. Events promoted by the Consulate General in collaboration with ENIT-Italia, Institute of Culture, Italian Trade-Agency and Campania Region.

09/16/23.08.2018 – Rossini Under the Stars –On the occasion of the Rossini celebrations around the world, a series of screenings of Rossini operas and food tasting with specialties from Pesaro at IIC.

17.10/05.11.2018 – Masterclasses on the reinterpretation of Italian food & wine cultures through innovation and technologyat theInternational Culinary Center in Campbell and San Diego. Organized by IACCW Los Angeles.

18.10.2018-21.10.2018 –WestEdge Design Fair – IACCW organizes live cooking demos and wine education activities in the Citibank culinary pavilion of the contemporary WestEdge Design Fair. Event in support of the Campaign for the inclusion of the “Colline del Prosecco di Valdobbiadene" in the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List.

29.10.2018 –A Modern Taste of Italian Cinema –Lecture at IIC dedicated to the great Italian contemporary director Ferzan Ozpetek and the culinary traditions that inspired his works. Organized by Lingua Viva in collaboration with IIC.

01.11.2018 – Wine class at IIC focused on wines from Puglia, with expert sommelier Giammario Villa, organized by IIC and Lingua Viva in collaboration with Vinomatica.

07.11.2018 – 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner – Fundraising ceremony in support of the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF) focused on the theme of longevity in relation to the Mediterranean Diet at Drago Restaurant. Organized by ISSNAF in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy.

12.11.2018 – Rossini, Master of Music and Food – Opening of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World at Del Piero’s Nº10 Restaurant in Los Angeles, organized by the Italian Academy of Cuisine (AIC) on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Rossini's death with a menu based on his favorite specialties.

12.11.2018 – A Modern Taste of Italian Cinema –Lecture at IIC dedicated to the great Italian contemporary director Matteo Garrone and the culinary traditions that inspired his works. Organized by Lingua Viva in collaboration with IIC.

12.11.2018-18.11.2018 – Pasta Pesto Day – Series of initiatives by EatalyLA promoting Ligurian Pesto in support of the campaign to relaunch a positive image of the city of Genoa following the tragedy of the Morandi Bridge.

13.11.2018 – Cinema Italian Style Gala Dinner – The Mr.C Hotel will be hosting a special Gala to honor the Italian movie stars of the Festival with a special menu created in collaboration with Starred Chef Felice Sgarra focused on the Mediterranean Diet and Apulian recipes. The event will be coordinated by the Italian-Trade Agency, Los Angeles.

14.11.2018 – Cinema Italian Style –Apuliancultural and culinary itineraries will be screened at the IIC in collaboration with ENIT Italia on the occasion of the opening of Cinema Italian Style.

15.11.2018 – Aperitivo Gourmet – Italy's heel has it all! The recipes of the Apulian tradition: finger food and appetizers accompanied by a fine selection of Italian and Salento wines. Organized by IACCW Los Angeles.

15.11.2018 – Dreaming Apulia & Pasta Pesto Day –The Four Seasons will shine on the table through typical dishes of the Puglia and Liguria region in support of the initiatives to promote the beauty of Genova following the the tragedy of the Morandi Bridge. At Obicà restaurant in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy.

16.11.2018 – Cinema and Food: a feast for the eyes and palates – Reception on the occasion of the World Week of Italian Cuisine and Cinema Italian Style to enhance Italian quality food and wines and the relationship between cinema and cuisine (especially related to Puglia, Liguria and Basilicata). The event will be organized at the Consul General residence, thanks also to the collaboration of Vini D’Aquino, Veneto Hills, The Truffle Hunter Umberto Ferri, Caffè Pasquini, and IEEM (International Event & Exhibition Management).

17.11.2018 – Fairytales in the Kitchen – Special cooking workshop dedicated to the children, inspired by the book “Fiabe di Riso” and focused on key foods of Italian culinary culture. Event organized by IIC in collaboration with Fondazione Italia.

Felice Sgarra is an Italian restaurateur and chef patron of Umami, a one-Michelin-star restaurant based in Andria, Puglia, which has been listed in the Italian Touring Club guide since 2015.

Sgarra’s contemporary culinary repertoire flourished during an internship under chef Niko Romito at Reale restaurant in Castel di Sangro (AQ), a gem of Italian gastronomy that rose to the top of the world’s 50 best restaurants in 2017.

He went on developing and refining his creativity at Cristallo in Cortina d’Ampezzo with Luigi Sforzellini; then at La Credenza in Piemonte with Grasso and Macchia; and after at Locanda del Borgo Antico with Massimo Camia, etc.

As one of the most influential figures of the Italian culinary industry, young Sgarra has been featured on the Swedish magazine Fool and acclaimed also among the finalists of the 2010 Bocuse d’Or Europe in Geneva.

Chef Sgarra has also appeared as special guest on La Prova del Cuoco (Rai 1) and was awarded the Ferrarelle prize for Best Traditional Recipe.

In 2011 he opened the Umami restaurant - a place where innovation and tradition merge into an elegant and authentic atmosphere marked by a modern use of genuine ingredients.

Following the success of Identità Golose in Milan and in Culinaria in Rome, he took his love for southern cuisine around the world (USA, Shanghai, Singapore, and Taipei) and found a way to combine the different traditions while holding true to his Italian roots.

Outside of the restaurant, Sgarra currently teaches at the International School of Cuisine (ALMA) and organizes seminars and masterclasses inspiring and bringing out talent in others.



The World Week of Italian Cuisine reaches its third edition with the aim of promoting Italian culinary traditions and food-and-wine culture as a distinctive trait of Italian identity and heritage.

The third edition of the “Week” will take place from November 12th to November 18th 2018 to highlight the best of Italian cuisine abroad, along with sustainability, culture, food security, the right to food, education, identity, territory and biodiversity.

Tourist destinations will also be enhanced during the “Week” featuring particularly culinary itineraries focused on the Mediterranean Diet, one of the elements that make Italy the healthiest Country in the world.

Crucial are also the activities aimed at spreading and internationalizing the training programs offered in this field, in order to attract talents from abroad and strengthen customer retention for high-quality Italian products

The project is included in the “2018 Year of Italian Food” and is also part of the Made in Italy Special Promotion Plan. Both initiatives are launched by the Italian Government to boost the distribution and commercial presence of authentic Italian food-and-wine products, as well as the objectives of the 2017-2022 Strategic Plan for Tourism, which aims to highlight abroad the undiscovered Italian territories.

The World Week of Italian Cuisine is coordinated by a Working Group established under the Protocol of Understanding for Maximizing Italian High-Quality Cuisine Abroad, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies (MIPAAF). The Week is organized through a cooperative effort of all the public and private entities representing the Italian cuisine in the world: institutions (MISE, MIUR, MIBACT, Regions), ITALIAN TRADE Agency, ENIT, universities, the Chambers of Commerce network, trade associations, cooking schools, design companies, food-and-wine business operators, and certified Italian restaurant networks. Reference points for more than 1000 scheduled activities are the 296 Diplomatic-Consular offices and the Italian Cultural Institutes, which coordinate the initiatives of the various partners to optimize the use of resources, make critical mass and ensure their consistency. Some selected Countries are targeted for enhancing promotion and communication actions: The United States, Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates. Among the planned activities there are: workshops and conferences, meetings with chefs, food-and-wine tastings and dinners, commercial promotion events and cooking classes. The Italian cuisine will also be represented through cultural initiatives, such as food related screenings and documentaries, conferences, concerts, language courses and photography exhibitions.
