A musical and ballet celebration of Caravaggio at LACMA (February 7, 2013)

In cooperation with the Italian Cultural Institute, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosted on February 7h  a musical and ballet performance in conjunction with the exhibition “Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy.”
The first half of the evening celebrating with music and ballet the work of Caravaggio began in the exhibition space with baroque instrumentalists performing throughout the galleries. The second half took place in the Bing Theater for the U.S. premiere of “Caravaggio”, a ballet composed by Giovanni Sollima and choreographed by Matteo Levaggi, performed by members of the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company.

Eclectic in his choices, Matteo Levaggi works with contemporary composers like Giovanni Sollima (who created Caravaggio’s music in 2004), Heiner Goebbels, Béla Bartok, Gyorgy Ligeti, but also authors of electronic music such as Scanner, Autechre, Pan Sonic, Bochumwelt, Andy of Bluvertigo. To date Matteo Levaggi is widely considered one of the main expressions of Italian contemporary dance in the world.
