GENERAL INFORMATION
SCHENGEN VISA (short term visa, up to 90 days, for the Schengen area)
European Union citizens do not require visas to travel to any of the Schengen area countries.
The Schengen area is composed of twenty-six countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.
Citizens of the following nations do NOT need visas to visit the Schengen Area for tourism, study, official, or business stays of 90 days or less every six months:
Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, El Salvador, Georgia, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong SAR, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Macao SAR, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Palau, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Seychelles, Singapore, South Korea, St. Kittis-Nevis, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America, Uruguay, Vatican City, Venzuela.
Taiwanese citizens receive the same privileges ONLY if their passports include their Identity Card reference number.
Citizens of the following nations do NOT need visas when visiting the Schengen Area for a stay of up to 90 days every six months ONLY if they are travelling with a biometric passport:
Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia.
Citizens of other countries must have a visa to enter the Schengen Area, even if they are legal residents of the United States of America.
To determine whether Italy is the correct nation to receive your application, count up the days you will be spending in Italy and in other Schengen Area countries. If:
Italy is your only Schengen Area destination, OR You are visiting different countries in the Schengen Area, but Italy is the country in the Schengen Area where you will be spending most of the time (number of days), OR You are visiting different countries in the Schengen area, but you are spending an equal number of days in each country, and Italy is your first port of entry in the Schengen area, then you may apply for a Schengen visa through this Consulate.
The Consular office will evaluate the documents submitted and may request additional ones at its discretion. Furthermore, the applicant should also be aware that:
1) Submitting the required documentation does not automatically guarantee the issuance of a visa.
2) He/she does not have the “right” to a visa
Holders of a Schengen visa are still subject to immigration control upon first entry into a Schengen country and are therefore not guaranteed automatic entry even when they hold a valid Schengen visa. Therefore, it is necessary to carry the documents used to obtain the visa at all times. Inability to produce them may prevent entry in Italy.
Rush processing is not possible.
During the summer months and holiday periods, a longer processing time may be required
Other visas, for a longer stays than 90 days or for the purpose of employment, etc., are still subject to the national laws of the country of destination.
NATIONAL VISA is a long term visa, over 90 days, only for Italy. It is issued for various types of visas (study, work, mission, etc.). This type of visa does not require fingerprinting.
Fingerprinting is required for persons applying for a Schengen Visa (up to 90 days). Children under the age of 12 are exempt from this requirement. Data will be recorded in the VIS central database, in accordance with the highest data protection standards, for a maximum of 5 (five) years and, during this period, they will be copied from the VIS database for subsequent visa applications.
